‘Vikings’ Season 3: 10 Things We Learned From Travis Fimmel’s Reddit AMA
During the rare Q&A session with fans, the 35-year-old Australian actor answered wide-ranging questions about the show and his personal life. Below are 10 interesting things he shared during his AMA session.
1. His most favorite moments from the set so far
“I liked tying Athelstan (George Blagden) up to a tree in the first year,” Fimmel wrote. “The sex scene with Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) was very enjoyable. And whenever we’re on the horses, I like that.”
2. On who he prefers, Lagertha or Aslaug?
“I love all women equally,” he said. “Anybody in Ragnar’s family, he loves…He’s just full of love. But Ragnar’s ex-wife (Lagertha) hates him as much as his current wife (Aslaug, played by Alyssa Sutherland) does, and I’m sure his next ex-wife will hate him too.”
3. A “Vikings” feature film may happen
“You never know!” he said when asked if there’s any chance they would make a movie based on the series. “There’s a lot of very talented people on set, and the Irish crew are very good at what they do, and you’re on set and you see the sets and costumes, and with Michael Hirst at the head of the show, I’m not surprised the show is doing well.”
4. On which came first, acting or modeling
“I was an actor before I modeled,” Fimmel revealed. “I just couldn’t get an actor’s job. But it got me a Visa, so I appreciate it.”
Interesting fact: Fimmel was the first male in the world to secure a six-figure deal to model exclusively for Calvin Klein for a year, according to The Age.
5. Actors that inspire him
“Chopper” is actually an Australian crime film released in 2000. The title role is played Eric Bana.
6. He’s very non-religious
“I’m very non-religious, in my day-to-day life,” he answered when asked about his views on how religions are being presented on the show. “But I think it’s very interesting. To learn about religions, and why it affects some people differently than others.”
7. The cast works with a dialect coach to sound Viking-like
“We have a great dialect coach, Paul Molakides, he’s Greek but from Ireland,” he wrote. “We didn’t really want to sound like anyone else. And we had a Swedish director for the first 3 episodes. And obviously no one knows how the Vikings really spoke, since there’s no recordings of it, so it gave us the opportunity to be unique.”
8. He loves little kids
“Little kids make me laugh,” he revealed, noting that they are the most entertaining on the set. “And Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) is very entertaining as well. And the lamb.”
9. Gustaf Skarsgård is not batsh–t crazy like his character Floki
“He’s an amazing person,” Fimmel said of his co-star Skarsgård when asked by a fan what kind of person he is off-camera. “He’s just a very talented actor, he can act crazy very well.”
10. Ragnar and Athelstan will grow closer in Season 3
“The relationship [between the two] gets better,” he said. “It’s my favorite person to do scenes with.”
Side note: In an interview with Zap2it, Blagden explained why Ragnar and Athelstan remain intact this season. “It’s useful to have someone else he trusts who’s probably the most objective of his family,” the 25-year-old British star said. “Over two seasons we’ve seen Ragnar create fractured relationships with his family and friends, but that hasn’t really happened with Athelstan.”
