Press: Comic-Con: ‘Vikings’ Brings a Fiery Funeral to San Diego

July 25, 2017

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – San Diego Comic-Con took a somber turn late Friday when History’s Vikings staged a first for the massive pop culture confab: a funeral.

The marketing stunt came after the drama parted ways with leading man Travis Fimmel as his Ragnar Lothbrok was killed off in season four, with Friday’s traditional Viking funeral offering die-hard viewers a chance to say a proper goodbye to the former king of Kattegat in style. The service featured History setting a Viking ship on fire as the cast and attendees looked on and celebrated the show’s upcoming rebirth.

“I remember the first year we were in a small room at the convention center with just a few hundred people and now it’s utterly staggering,” creator and showrunner Michael Hirst said before the ship was set ablaze. “It’s beyond comprehension, really.”

Katheryn Winnick, who plays Queen Lagertha, agreed. “This is a show that I think grows by word of mouth. Friends tell their friends to watch, family members tell their family members to watch,” she said. “I’ve really seen a big shift in the last few years of die-hard fans, they get tattoos of our characters on their bodies. It’s crazy!”

That faithful fan base was out in full force, with many in cosplay as various characters, showing off their unique body art and trumpeting their Viking blowing horns as they paid their respects to the character. Finally, when the time came, the crowd was led in a chant that sent Ragnar off to Valhalla once and for all and the ship erupted in flames.

The flames raged on while the audience cheered. For Alex Hogh Andersen, who joined in season four as Ragnar’s son Ivar the Boneless, it was the perfect end to his first Comic-Con experience.

Press: S5 Gets Premiere Date, Trailer Teasing ‘The End of Our World’

July 22, 2017

TV LINE – History’s Vikings not only announced a Season 5 premiere date at the San Diego Comic-Con, it also released a typically intense trailer that warns of A) a war between brothers, B) a civil war and, for good measure, C) no less than “the end of of world” (as Lagertha puts it).

Returning Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 9/8c with a two-hour premiere, Vikings‘ new run features Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) as Bishop Heahmund, joining series regulars Katheryn Winnick, Gustaf Skarsgård, Alexander Ludwig and Alex Høgh Andersen.

Per the cabler, Season 5 begins with Ivar the Boneless asserting his leadership over the Great Heathen Army, while Lagertha reigns as Queen of Kattegat. Ivar’s murder of his brother Sigurd sets the stage for vicious battles to come as Ragnar’s sons plot their next moves after avenging their father’s death. Bjorn follows his destiny into the Mediterranean Sea and Floki, who is suffering from the loss of his wife Helga, takes to the seas submitting himself to the will of the gods.

The trailer above finishes with an ominous image, of an an Icelandic volcano erupting, as Lagertha’s aforementioned words weigh heavy….

Press: Everything you need to know before the “Vikings” Comic Con panel

July 19, 2017

EW – The Vikings panel at San Diego Comic-Con is always a raucous affair, but expect an especially wild time with the HISTORY series this year. Coming off a radical season that saw major characters depart the series, this year’s Vikings panel will include longtime stars Katheryn Winnick, Gustaf Skarsgard, and Alexander Ludwig, along with new key figure Alex Hogh Anderson (who plays devious rising conqueror Ivar) and the show’s creator Michael Hirst.

But Vikings is also staging a major event: An honest-to-god Viking Funeral, complete with a procession through the Gaslamp Quarter on Friday afternoon. The funeral will culminate at 7 p.m. local time with a pyrotechnic display on a 45-foot Viking longship, on the waterfront behind the Convention Center at Embarcadero Marina Park South. (Anyone who attends the latter can pick up their own Viking drinking horn.)

In addition, the cast will take over EW’s Snapchat account all day Friday for an inside look at all their goings on throughout the day (yes, including that Viking Funeral). Follow along by adding EWSnaps on Snapchat.

The sons of Ragnar seek ‘Revenge’ (Video)

January 17, 2017

EW – This week’s episode of Vikings is titled “Revenge,” and with good reason. The sons of Ragnar Lothbrok have quite a bit of vengeance to seek as they prepare to set off for England. Their father lies in Northumbria, buried under ground (and quite a few poisonous snakes). Young warriors in Viking society are naturally ambitious; when the motivation is retribution for the death of their hero father, the ambitions go cosmic.

But who will lead the massive army that is gathering in Kattegat? In this exclusive clip from the new episode of History’s epic drama, eldest child Bjorn Ironside lectures his half-brothers on leadership. Ubbe, Hvitserk, and Sigurd listen thoughtfully; cruel Ivar seems to have murder in his eyes. Watch the clip here, and check out Vikings on History tonight at 10 p.m. And be sure to come back here after the episode for our recap and weekly conversation with Vikings creator Michael Hirst.

BLU-RAY REVIEW: VIKINGS SEASON 4, PART 1

October 22, 2016

Note: This is for Australian versions of the BluRay which might be different than versions in your country.

BLU-RAY REVIEW: VIKINGS SEASON 4, PART 1 CRAMS IN A PILE OF FEATURES ALONG ITS 10 EPISODES

THE IRIS – When Viking king Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) told his young sons as they sailed away from Kattegat: “Don’t waste your time looking back, you’re not going that way,” Michael Hirst, creator and writer of Vikings was reminding viewers that this is a show constantly moving forward. As Hirst reiterates during the extras of the Season 4, Part 1 Blu-ray edition of Vikings, the Scandinavian drama was always going to be about the sons of Ragnar, who went on to accomplish far greater deeds than their father.

The first ten episodes of Season 4 of Vikings offer all the spectacular, bloody battles and family drama the hit series is known for, along with a decadent dose of betrayal, lust and murder. Highlights of Season 4 thus far include the addition of Finnish thesps Peter Franzén and Jasper Pääkkönen as the brazen Norse brothers King Finehair and Halfdan the Black.

There was Ragnar’s memorable descent into madness, comical, but so very tragic at times, and we watched the Northmen dismantle their entire fleet of ships, haul them up a cliff and through the forest in “Portage.” There was also the impressive transformation of Rollo (Clive Standen) and the jarring time-jump in the season finale as Hirst continues to push boundaries on the show now incorporating three worlds: Viking, French and English. Vikings remains at its heart a family saga, an ode to historical authenticity and a riveting, visually stunning television series.

Season 4, Part 1 Review Score: FOUR STARS (OUT OF FIVE)

We got our hands on the Blu-ray edition of this release. Here’s a look at the special features you’ll find in the Australian release:

The Transformation of Rollo

Michael Hirst and Clive Standen discuss Rollo’s transformation from brute savage to French noble, as he shifts away from the shadow of his famous brother Ragnar to pave his own destiny.

The Viking Seafaring Prowess

Interviews with Michael Hirst, Katheryn Winnick (Lagertha), authors Olaf Engvig and Danielle Turner explore the genius behind the viking longboats. Learn about warships and trading vessels, the theory of the sunstone, navigation and portage. As Michael Hirst aptly puts it, “naval engineering of an extraordinary kind.”
